Mobile-Classroom

LCW Partners with Chico State on Mobile Classroom

Creating the Classroom

If you can dream it we can build it, that’s our philosophy here at Leisure Coachworks. When California State University at Chico’s School of Education set out to create a customized Mobile Classroom, we were excited to be part of the project.

They brought us the motorhome that would become their mobile classroom. We completely emptied the Winnebago of its original components. We removed the bathroom, shower, and refrigerator. In their place went seating and tables, bookshelves, and storage space.

Working hand-in-hand with the folks at Chico State, we made their new space versatile and comfortable.

The first challenge was to create enough space for activities like professional development workshops. The Mobile Classroom offers educators in rural areas opportunities that would otherwise involve days of travel.

To accommodate classes, the Winnebago needed both seats and tables. Booth seating offered the best use of the space. Three sections of seating were installed. Attendees also needed writing space, so we created custom tables.

These tables can be removed when the classroom is in use for other activities. The easy conversion from a formal learning space to an open-concept multi-use space was important to make the vehicle as versatile as possible.

Leisure Coachworks was also able to convert the exterior areas that once held water and other tanks. Those became pass-through storage. This mobile classroom can carry the materials it needs wherever it goes.

At the back of the RV, we created even more storage and installed a large TV. This area became the perfect place for an instructor to lead a class.

A key component of this conversion was the inclusion of a wheelchair lift. Our team made sure the classroom is accessible to all.

Creating Connections

The Mobile Classroom is a way for Chico State educators to connect with and support schools throughout the community. Tal Slemrod, who led the project to transform an RV into a Mobile Classroom, took it out on its first voyage.

Heading to a rural area, the Mobile Classroom hosted listening sessions and training in special education. It was an invaluable opportunity for both the university and local school staff.

Chico State has plans to broaden the use of the Mobile Classroom. Supporting outdoor lessons and place-based learning, fundraising, and providing a safe space are all possibilities. Read more about their end of this custom project.

A Life-Changing Conversion

We’re proud to have played a role in getting area teachers, staff, and students the resources they need through Chico State’s School of Education. In every project we do, we take pride in the ingenuity and craftsmanship our team provides.

For the Mobile Classroom, we made sure that everything is as functional and versatile as possible. As always, we went the extra mile to make sure everything in the build looked exactly as though it was always meant to be that way.

No detail was left unattended. From warm wood tones to custom upholstery colors and flooring, the Mobile Classroom is an inviting space. It can be configured to comfortably hold a full class. Removing the tables offers additional floor space and a more casual atmosphere.

We’re excited to see how Chico State uses its LCW Custom Mobile Classroom in the future. We’re grateful to have played a role in a project that will improve the lives of students and teachers for years to come.
