Fun in Fontana: Things to Do During Your RV Repair and Service

You know that your motorhome or travel trailer needs regular maintenance and service. You also know that RV repair is part of owning a home on wheels. Leisure Coachworks (LCW) is a full-service RV shop and most jobs can be done in a day. Custom work and more complicated jobs may take longer.

We make it easy for you to stay in your coach overnight during its visit to LCW. We have full hookups so you have a cozy, familiar place to sleep. But what will you do while you wait? Even if your rig is done in one day, you can enjoy Fontana while we get your RV ready for the road.

Transportation

Let’s get this out of the way first: You’ll need some sort of transportation since your RV will be in the shop! If you have a travel trailer you’re all set with your tow vehicle.

If you’re coming from far away with a Class A motorhome, consider towing a car for more flexibility. Many of our customers travel quite a ways to get to us, from all across the U.S. and Canada. If your RV repair or service will take more than a day you’ll want to venture out into the surrounding area.

If you don’t have a car or truck, you can rent a car, use public transit, or catch an Uber or a cab to your destinations. We’re happy to help you figure out the best way to get where you want to go!

Fontana and San Bernardino

Is your RV repair going to be done in a single day? Then you probably want to stick around Fontana. There is plenty to do! If you have a few days to spend, you can explore more of San Bernardino County.

Auto Club Speedway

Speedway

Our first stop will be right across the street from Leisure Coachworks: the Auto Club Speedway. On the site of the former Kaiser Steel Mill, the speedway has something for every racing fan.

Throughout the year, you’ll find Xfinity, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and IndyCar series events. If you want to get in on the action, the Speedway offers packages that give you a chance to get behind the wheel!

Directions

The Auto Club Speedway is just across Cherry Ave. from Leisure Coachworks. You can walk over while your RV repair is underway.

Route 66

If you’ve been following our Route 66 RV Road Trip, you know that there’s always something interesting on this iconic American highway. And it just so happens to pass right through Fontana, CA.

On this stretch of The Mother Road, you’ll find a Wigwam Motel as you head east towards San Bernardino. If you aren’t staying with your rig at LCW, check out this bit of vintage Americana!

A little ways off Route 66 in San Bernardino you’ll find another piece of history, the site of the original McDonald’s, which is now a museum. The First Original McDonald’s Museum is a small space filled with the happy, kitschy vibe of Route 66.

Directions

Route 66 is just north of Leisure Coachworks. Turn right on Cherry Ave. and you’ll come right to it. It’s also known as W. Foothill Blvd. Turn right to find the Wigwam. Head east into San Bernardino and take a left on NE St. to get to the McDonald’s museum.

Martin Tudor—Jurupa Hills Regional Park

Just a little south of Leisure Coachworks you’ll find a great spot to hike. Martin Tudor—Jurupa Hills Regional Park has some great trails and if you’re up for a challenge you’ll be rewarded with some beautiful views of the area from steeper climbs.

If you’re looking for something more relaxing, head to the Mary Vagle Museum and Nature Center on the other side of this big park. Learn about area wildlife, take a stroll around the pond, and visit the gorgeous gardens.

Directions

From LCW turn left on Cherry Ave. and head south for a few miles. Turn left on Jurupa and right on Sierra Ave. to get to the entrance of the park.

Fontana Park and Fontana Park Aquatic Center

If you want to spend the day outdoors, especially if you’re traveling with kids, head to Fontana Park. Like Auto Club Speedway, Fontana Park sits on the site of an old steel mill. It was turned into a park in the 1980s and opened in its current form in 2008.

This big, 40-acre park has it all. Nature trails, a dog park, picnic areas, and a skate park. The whole family can cool off at the Fontana Park Aquatic Center. It has children’s pools, splash parks, slides, and even a lazy river for a relaxing afternoon.

While you’re at Fontana Park, stop in at the Art Depot. This building that used to be a freight train depot now houses exhibits and classes.

Directions

Fontana Park is about 6 miles north of Leisure Coachworks but the easiest way to get there is a touch longer. Turn right on Cherry Ave. out of LCW and head three miles north to CA-210 East. Take exit 66 and turn left on Citrus Ave. Another left on Summit Ave. will take you to the park.

San Bernardino Railroad and History Museum

This little museum has limited hours, but if your RV repair brings you to Leisure Coachworks on a Wednesday or Saturday, you’re in luck! Antique trains, cars, buggies, and even clocks fill the San Bernardino Railroad and History Museum.

The restored 1918 Santa Fe Depot is the perfect spot for this slice of local history. Your visit is free and the museum is run entirely by volunteers.

Directions

Turn right on Cherry Ave., left on Route 66, right on N. Mount Vernon Ave., and left on 3rd St. It’s a lot of turns but easier than it sounds.

Rim of the World Scenic Byway

Nature lovers won’t want to miss a drive along the Rim of the World Scenic Byway. This incredible drive loops up into the San Bernardino National Forest and offers spectacular scenery and a lot of fun things to do.

If your coach is in for service for several days, there are quite a few places to stay along this byway. From vintage cottages to luxury resorts, the small towns are filled with quaint lodgings.

If you’re just in the mood for a drive, you won’t be disappointed by any section of this spectacular byway. Check a good map and plan your trip based on what you want to see and do.

Lake Arrowhead, a small town buried in the National Forest, offers accommodations and a host of activities.

Big Bear Lake
Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake is the place to head for adventure. From hiking trails to water sports, this lakeside community is famous for its four-season beauty. The whole family will find something to love at Big Bear.

Directions

Get onto the Rim of the World Scenic Byway from LCW by turning right on Cherry Ave. and following it up to Highway 210. Drive east and exit onto Highway 330, which will take you into the San Bernardino National Forest. Make sure to print out or take screenshots of a good map of the byway – cell service in the mountains can be spotty.
