Gold Beach > Bandon > Florence > Pacific City > Mount Hood

TOTAL DRIVE: 8 hours, without traffic

Leaving Gold Beach, Oregon

As you pull out of gorgeous Gold Beach, you may find it difficult to put the memories of the sandy shores and green expanses behind you. But carrying on along the Pacific Coast Highway, heading northbound, you’re sure to fall in love with the next destination we’ve bookmarked.

Savor one last bite of Oregon’s sumptuous seafood fare at the famous Barnacle Bistro before loading up the RV, crossing the Rogue River, and taking the PCH towards Bandon.

As you hit the road along Highway 101, be prepared for stunning coastal views for the next 1.5 hours. One of the must-see sights on this route is the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor, which spans over 12 miles and offers numerous pullouts where you can stop and admire the rugged cliffs, secluded beaches, and dramatic rock formations.

About halfway through your first leg of the journey, you’ll pass through Cape Blanco State Park––home to Oregon’s oldest continuously operating lighthouse. Take a break and explore the campground or hike one of the park’s trails to experience panoramic views of the ocean and the coastal forests.

Finally, as you begin to see the ‘welcome’ signs of Bandon ahead, be sure to take another rest nearby at Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint in Bandon itself—legend has it that this unique rock formation resembles the profile of a woman gazing out at sea. But try and see for yourself.

RV Accommodation:

Pulling into Bandon, you’ll be spoiled for options when it comes to parking the RV. Bandon RV Park is arguably the most popular spot in the city for convenience, amenities, and proximity to the downtown core. Featuring 45 full hookup spaces, laundry, restrooms, and access to nearby grocery stores, it’s ideal for taking a break. Bandon By The Sea RV Park is another great option, as is Coquille River RV Park.

Bandon, Oregon

Famed for its many beaches, Bandon, Oregon, is a little slice of heaven. Storybook scenery and charming locals make it a perfect destination for stopping. Explore one of the area’s most captivating sights: the Coquille River lighthouse. Teeming with historical significance, it sits in the equally impressive Bullards Beach State Park where countless outdoor recreational activities await the more adventurous explorers.

If a contemplative scenic walk, surrounded by all things beautiful in Bandon, is more your speed, be sure to check out the Oregon Coast Public Art Trail.

And no trip to Bandon is complete without a sampling of the area’s fresh seafood. Pop into one of the many local favorites, like Tony’s Crab Shack for a snappy and satisfying lunch, or the more upscale Edgewaters for a romantic, waterside supper.

As you pull into the fantastically charming city of Florence, you’ll no doubt be immediately drawn to the abundance of waterside attractions visible from your window.

First and foremost, the iconic Heceta Head Lighthouse stands tall on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, offering breathtaking views and an opportunity to learn about its fascinating history. Another truly unique attraction exclusive to Florence, the Sea Lion Caves is a popular spot where visitors can observe thousands of sea lions in their natural habitat through an elevator ride down to cave level.

Pacific City, Oregon

One of the most majestic experiences of driving north from Florence to Pacific City, Oregon, is traveling through Siuslaw National Forest––a veritable wonderland of activity and scenic beauty. This other-worldly expanse of greenery stretches from the lush forests of the coastal mountains to the unique Oregon Dunes and the beaches of the Pacific Ocean, giving every camper an individual experience they’re not likely to forget. And that’s just on the way to the next destination.

Pulling into Pacific City, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the recreational attractions on offer. As far as the eye can see, sand and water stretch out in rivulets, abutting beautiful swathes of green. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind city.

Hang gliding is a popular pastime in Pacific City––in fact, the Oregon Hang Gliding School is located here, perfect for beginners looking to introduce themselves to some high-flying adventure. Cape Kiwanda Natural Area is another outdoor park to be experienced. The sandstone headland features naturally carved dunes that create a unique terrain that begs to be explored. Speaking of sand (there’s lots of it in Pacific City), sandboarding is a popular sport for locals. And it is just what it sounds like: instead of surfing the waves, you stride your sandboard and glide down the silky sandy dunes.

Once you’ve worked up a sweat charging the dunes, soaring sky-high, or taking an invigorating paddle boat out on the water, stop in at the Pelican Pub for a tasty lunch, or take a quiet walk along the shores and keep an eye out for whales breaching the surface of the waters.

RV Accommodation:

In Pacific City, RV parks are easily found up and down the coastline. But Cape Kiwanda RV Resort is easily one of the most popular––and prettiest.

Directions:

Take US-26 East toward Portland

Mount Hood, Oregon

Taking a 3-hour detour from the coastal shorelines of the Pacific Coast Highway (by now, you will have seen signs referring to it as the “Oregon Coast Highway”––but you’re still in the right place), a drive through Oregon is just not complete without a visit to Mount Hood.

Nestled in the Cascade Range, Mount Hood National Forest is one of the gems of America’s national parks.

There is a ton of outdoor activity to be experienced: from vigorous hiking trails to climbing naturally formed rock walls. The highlight of any visit to the park has to be the majestic Mount Hood itself––the stunning snow-capped peak dominates the entire landscape and is pretty hard to miss. Campers looking for adventure can climb its mighty slopes, year-round, but it’s even better in the summer.

If you prefer a more leisurely pace, take a peaceful stroll through the dense forests that surround the mountain or just roll out a blanket and picnic basket and relax by one of the crystal-clear lakes that dot the area. With its awe-inspiring natural beauty and range of recreational offerings, Mount Hood National Park is an ideal destination for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike.

RV Accommodation:

The Mount Hood Village Campground and RV Resort is THE place to park while still having ready access to the natural beauty of the area. Pull into one of 300 individual RV spots and take advantage of the countless amenities.

If you decide to end your journey at Mt. Hood, there are still plenty of attractions to experience on-site, or in and around the Portland area, before returning south down the CA-1. Or you can keep heading north. In fact, we’ve got another stretch of PCH to explore that takes you and your RV even further north.
