Custom RV Walkthrough | Before Burning Man 2024 Ep3

Welcome back to the 2024 Burning Man custom RV remodel! Jon is taking us on our third tour of this big, complicated Class A Motorhome project being done on a tight timeline. Catch up with the first two episodes:

  • In episode one, we saw the coach as it looked when it rolled into the shop and learned about the customer’s vision.
  • In episode two, we got an inside look at some of the necessary slide out repairs and the interior mock-up.

This time, Jon is showing us the progress the team has made on the RV interior and exterior as the project gets even bigger!

Custom RV Exterior

The first thing we see is the front panel (called the cap) of the Class A motorhome on the floor of the shop. It was removed so the team could make repairs and make room for a larger generator. Did you ever wonder what was behind that panel? Now you know!

The team is also hard at work on a new exterior feature: a roof deck. Jon shows us how they’re preparing the roof of the RV and the construction of the deck itself. This feature needs to be light and strong, so it’s framed out in aluminum. It will fold out when completed for maximum space and safety while the rig is at Burning Man.

Custom RV Interior

There is so much happening inside this motorhome! The team doesn’t have a lot of time, and the build is complex, so there are a lot of balls in the air. Jon shows us each area of the coach and updates the progress and the plan.

This is a great project to show how important it is to shore up the structure of a custom RV for the new elements. From steel strapping to support cabinets and TVs to wood framing to support the roof (and the new roof deck) the team relies on their experience to make this vehicle as durable as it is beautiful.

Jon gives us a first look at the new features going into this custom motorhome. Bunks will have privacy, storage, and entertainment while using every inch of space for maximum efficiency.

The Japanese-themed décor is already showing as the team creates the slatted wood ceiling design to coordinate with the interior colors and other elements. The theme will flow through the coach, from a custom privacy screen for the front bunk to a beautifully designed bedroom wall.

When the roof deck was added to the project, the air conditioning ducts had to be re-routed. New components create new challenges. The kitchen will work around a storage compartment. The bed will be recessed to give the owner more space. The steam shower wall will double as a support for the roof deck ladder.

Even the lighting and venting will be reset to blend properly with the themed ceiling design. As always, the goal is to create a cohesive space where everything looks like it was always intended to be that way.

This walk-through tour gives us a chance to see the complexity of a custom RV remodel of this scale. Wiring needs to be moved and then hidden, cabinets are designed to maximize every inch of space, and every bit of craftsmanship is intentional. It’s amazing to see the meticulous attention to detail.

Jon talks about the slide out rooms and how they are customized to fit the design theme and be as useful as possible. The bedroom slide out will hold a sink and a booth with overhead cabinets. There is an engine to work around back there, so the bedroom needs a step up to keep the entire room on the same level.

The other slide out will have a special compartment for another custom component tailored to the Burning Man experience. This custom RV will have space for 12-foot aluminum poles to be used as a frame for a large exterior tent area. They will tuck in right over that slide room, out of the way until they’re needed.

We’re so excited to see the final reveal of this amazing project. Subscribe to our YouTube channel and never miss a video. This rig is headed to Burning Man in less than 30 days!
