Ditching SCHWINTEK Slide Outs for Vroom Slide Systems | Custom RV Before Burning Man 2024 Ep2

2015 Thor Motor Coach Palazzo Series Motorhome RV

The last time we saw the Burning Man custom RV, it had just rolled into the shop. It needed a lot of work on a tight deadline. Today we’re taking a look at the broken slide out and Jon is going to show us how they fixed it.

This slide-out room was stuck partially open. It was in the way of other work so there was only one thing to do: remove it completely. It’s not every day we get to see a slide room sitting outside the vehicle in our RV repair shop!

Having that space allowed the crew to pull out the floor and make all the adjustments necessary for the new floor plan. Then it was time to get that room back into working order.

It was clear, once the room was removed, that some of the floor components were broken. The team will combine a new design for the space with the practical matter of making the room functional. Jon shows us how the new Shogun-inspired theme is coming together to make this custom RV everything the customer wants.

Slide out systems are some of our most common RV repairs. They can be a little unreliable and sticking open or closed is not uncommon. For this custom RV build, the team is going to replace the entire system.

They want a more robust, stronger mechanism that will be as reliable as possible.

A slide room itself is pretty simple. It’s composed of just three layers of specialty materials, keeping it strong and lightweight. With the room removed, the team discovered that the framing of the floor was broken and bent. The broken piece was re-welded and the floor was straightened and reinforced.

This RV slide out was home to the kitchen, meaning the floor had a lot of steps where the booth, dishwasher, pantry, and other elements were located. Removing those steps gives the team space to reconfigure bunks, storage, and a long bench seat.

As the team redesigned the slide room, they discovered that the roller system that moved the room was installed incorrectly. It was crooked and not firmly attached. The crew got it back into shape so it’s secure and lines up with aluminum plates on the bottom of the floor.

The metal guides on the slide out system were also modified to line up with the new T-bars that offer increased stability and ease of movement. Watch the team put the room back in the vehicle before replacing the current Schwintek system with a new Vroom system for increased durability and reliability.

Now that we’ve talked about this custom RV slide out repair, it’s time to see what’s happening inside the Burning Man RV! Jon takes us on a tour of the new floorplan framing and amazing custom elements. This build will have a steam shower, extra fresh water, and a custom closet with steps for roof access.

As the design takes shape, the team discovers issues including an improperly sealed engine intake. They make plans for relocating lights and wiring. These complex custom RV jobs come with a million details and our Leisure Coachworks technicians are experts at creating beautiful, functional, optimized spaces that perfectly match the customer’s vision.
