RV Travel with Pets: Tips and Hints

RV travel, for some of us, is the only way to go. The freedom of the open road is irresistible. We travel solo, with spouses and children, and with our pets.

We’re going to look at ways to make RV travel as fun and comfortable for your pets as it is for you and your family. We’ll be focusing on dogs and cats since they are the most common four-legged travel companions and those that require the most care.

Traveling with pets can be a little complicated. RV travel with pets has its own special set of requirements. Most of these requirements hold no matter what type of pet you bring with you on the road.

Health Records

Always bring health and vaccination records with you when you travel with pets. Any pets. Requirements for animals’ medical records vary from place to place. Make sure you have an up-to-date Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and current vaccination records.

The last thing you need is to be turned away from a campground because you lack a piece of paper proving your animal’s health.

Medications

If your pet takes medication, be sure to bring enough for the duration of the trip. Don’t count on being able to refill a prescription from your vet on the road. If your pet is prone to things like upset stomachs, have your preferred home remedies with you as well.

Food and Water

Of course, you’ll bring enough food and water for your pets. But keep in mind your destination. Is it hotter where you’re going? Make sure your pet has access to more water than usual.

Your dog or cat may get a little motion sickness when you’re on the road. Monitor how much they’re eating and drinking. You can prevent dehydration and be sure your pet is comfortable.

Safe Travel

Both dogs and cats (and smaller pets in cages) need to be secure when you’re on the road. Cats should ride in a carrier and dogs either in a crate or a harness. Loose animals can get hurt, and they can distract you as you drive.

Make sure you have enough free space in your RV for your pet to travel safely.

Never leave your pet in your RV without proper heating or cooling. Have stickers indicating you have pets with contact information visible if you must leave them.

Pet-Friendly Destinations

Don’t assume that all campgrounds or RV parks are pet-friendly. Check websites or call ahead to make sure. Other destinations during your travels may also have restrictions. Check out beaches, public parks, and other attractions beforehand.

Make sure you know the pet-related rules before you go. Responsible pet owners encourage more destinations to be pet-friendly.

At Home in the RV

If you’re traveling in your RV with a pet for the first time, plan a slow, easy introduction to your vehicle. You want your furry pals to be comfortable in their home on wheels. Tailor your introduction to the personality of your pet.

Dogs

Introduce your RV from the outside in. Let your good boy or good girl do plenty of sniffing of tires and doors, offering treats as you go. Open the door and allow them to wander inside to do more sniffing.

Once they’re sniffed out try feeding them a meal or two in your RV. They need to know that the RV is the source of good things.

Cats

Whether or not you plan to allow your cat outside during your RV travel they need a harness and a leash. That’s the first step for any kitty traveler. Once they’re comfortable they can explore the outside and inside of your RV much like your dog.

If your cat hates the car, you’re in for a challenge. Take it slow and allow your feline friend to become accustomed to the movement and vibration.
