Welcome back to Leisure Coachworks videos. Today we’re getting professional advice from Jon about teardrop doors for your small travel trailers. So many of you in the RV community love DIY projects, and we believe in you! We love seeing how every vehicle is personalized for your best RV life.
Like any DIY project, choosing and installing teardrop doors is much easier with some guidance. Among the many RV parts available in our parts store, you’ll find the high-quality Leisure Coachworks teardrop doors that Jon is talking about today. These doors are available in either black or white.
We love teardrop trailers. They are a convenient, versatile option for those of you who like to travel light. They can be pulled by smaller vehicles and customized to be personalized works of RV art. One of our favorite custom RV projects began with a vintage teardrop trailer. The team turned it into a Bauhaus beauty, with sleek, updated features and a dream design for the customer.
Jon walks us through the features that you’ll find on our teardrop doors and gives some DIY hints for the best possible installation. There are some common questions our customers ask about these doors and this video provides the answers.
First, let’s take a look at the general specifications:
- Can be installed on either the driver’s or passenger’s side of the trailer
- Doors come in three cut-out sizes: W 26” X H32”, W 30” X H 36”, and W 23” V H 40”
- The exterior of the teardrop door is approximately 2”-3” larger than the cut-out size
- Doors have face-mount foam core insulation
- Doors are 2 3/8” thick from the backside of the flange
Jon goes into detail about the features that make Leisure Coachworks teardrop doors special. He tells us about the privacy glass window, the secure lock system, and the multi-function built-in screen.
Sometimes, the smallest details can cause big headaches during a DIY project. Jon takes the time to point out the small parts that must be removed after the door is installed. These items protect the door during shipping but need to be taken out for optimal operation.
Jon also points out that Leisure Coachworks teardrop doors have rounded radius upper corners and square lower corners. This is an important detail. There isn’t necessarily a standard door shape for teardrop trailers, especially custom or vintage models. So before ordering a door for your teardrop, make sure to check both the shape and size.
When measuring for your new teardrop door, the important dimensions are the interior cut-out measurements. Jon flips the door so we can see that the inside dimensions, which represent the size of the cut-out the door fits into, are smaller than the exterior dimensions.
To make sure your new door fits properly, Jon suggests making a template. A plywood template that matches the cutout dimensions precisely makes it easier to determine which door is right for your trailer.
Last but certainly not least, Jon shows us how to install the insert molding. This vital step protects the door from water. We’re always on the lookout for ways to prevent water damage.
